15 km south-west of the Brisbane CBD.

Demographics

Over 45% of households in this area are made up of couples with children, 28% are couples without children and 22% are single parent families. According to the 2006 Census, there were 3,813 people living in the area with a median age of 33. The median individual income was $392 per week. Of all occupied private dwellings, 56.4% were either fully owned or being purchased; 34.6% were being rented.

Housing data

Darra is an older suburb with plenty of chamferboard and weatherboard homes built in the 1940s and 50s, as well as new townhouses and brick and tile houses. Stand alone houses account for 94% of all dwellings in this area, with units accounting for a further 3%.

Median Price

REIQ research shows that the median house price in the suburb for the calendar year 2006 was $240,000.

Median Weekly Rent

The median weekly rent paid for a 3-bedroom house in this area in the June 2007quarter was $260. The median weekly rent paid for a 2-bedroom unit in this area for the same period was not available.

Profile

The Brisbane City Council has been active in rejuvenating the streetscapes of Darra, as well as neighbouring recreational and parkland facilities in Jindalee and Sinnamon Park. Council has also recently completed a Suburban Centre Improvement Project in the shopping area on Darra Station Road. Part of the Council’s overall vision for the area involves the further redevelopment of the industrial park in the area that should provide an injection of capital into the community and further upgrade local infrastructure and community facilities.

The suburb is conveniently located on the train-line and this will provide incentive for people to settle there, as travel to the city is relatively fast and easy.

There have been a number of people of Vietnamese origin settle in the area which has provided an interesting cultural diversity in terms of local shops and eateries. Darra is right next door to the Centenary suburbs and conveniently located near the Mount Ommaney shopping centre with its many retail and commercial facilities. The Centenary Highway and the Ipswich Highway provide convenient access to the Brisbane CBD.
